THE UN-AMERICAN SONGBOOK

Conceived and written by Dick Vosburgh, original music by Denis King

Dick Vosburgh’s last major work before his death the following year. Sobering as well as entertaining--through song, parody, sketches and reminiscences, the evening chronicles the dark days of the notorious McCarthy witch hunts and the damages the House Un-American Activities Committee inflicted on writers and artists, along with the resulting paranoia that existed through those terrifying years.

First performed at the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden, 12 November 2006

Fact of the Day

At age 15, Denis was performing six shows a day at London's famous Windmill Theatre but was not allowed to wait in the wings for his entrance with his older brothers because they followed the naked Fan Dancer act---Denis had fifteen seconds to race down five flights from the dressing room to be onstage when the curtain went up.
